Artist and Painting

Henry, Calixte
was born 1933 in Port-au-Prince. After primary and secondary education at Lycee Petion, he became a telegraphist. In 1955 he joined the Centre d’Art and worked four years under Mrs. Barbara Obin. His early style has evolved from impressionism through cubism, favoring the style of Braque – but usually with Haitian subjects. He gave up the brush and razor blade for the palate knife. After three years in the US, where he exhibited and in Switzerland, he won special mention in a Guggenheim contest, having been judged “too far advanced” to qualify for their prize of a scholarship.
